The Toys of Men Launches To No.2 in Sales TTOM: Reviews
Oct 23, 2007 Associated Press "The Toys of Men" marks a welcome return to performing and recording by jazz bassist Stanley Clarke, who in recent years has focused more on film and TV scoring. Clarke blazed a new trail for bass players during the jazz-rock fusion movement of the '70s as a founding member of Chick Corea's Return to Forever and a solo artist on such albums as "School Days," helping elevate the instrument from a supporting to a front-line role. More All About Jazz.com The Toys of Men is a mature work from an artist who’s got nothing left to prove, and is the closest thing to a fusion album Clarke’s released since the inconsistent collaborative effort Vertú (Epic, 1999). A far more satisfying disc, it’s a career consolidation of sorts, with Clarke also delivering a series of lyrical solo acoustic bass miniatures, referencing past efforts while, at the same time, playing with considerably more restraint.
